Good to hear from you. The reaction from dotors is mixed: from those who are baffled by the idea of paruresis, to those who are familiar with it. You have to be prepared to explain that it is not your "choice" to not go, but that it is out of your control.
As for self-catheterisation, again the reaction is mixed. Common replies are:
- that infection is too much of a problem; for men infection is rare, for women, for obvious reasons, it is more common. Personal hygiene is critical.
- that self cathing is not the answer (!): to this you have to challenge by asking what you are supposed to do when caught out: suffer retention or go to A&E, neither of which is reasonable.
BTW the USA site has a womens support section, which gives detailed advice on how to self-caths. Or email me and I can emial back the document.
