Paruresis Plane

Hey,

I just found this forum and need some advice. I have actually not a big problem with going in public restrooms. I only cannot go in plane toilets. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn´t. Unfortunately I am a copilot so I am nearly every day in the plane and get confronted with this problem. I do not know what I should do. I already thought about giving up this job and do something else, what do you guys think? I have also thought about using a catheter but I am a bit afraid of doing this. And I am also not sure if the breath holding method is the right thing to try out because the only place to practice would be in the plane, but there I am not sure if that is the place to do. Would you rather try the catheter way or the breath holding method? I have also seen that some people try a tablet called Desmopressin but I am not sure if that is a good idea.

I hope to hear your ideas.

On research catheters are definitely safe to use on planes, moreover some people for other conditions can only go using a catheter and after a while describe it as a non-event. The breath holding technique is less sure fire, but i dont see why a plane should make it too much of an issue. maybe try it in another scenario on land where you struggle to go.

Go on a beginners workshop. It sounds like your AP would respond well to the kind of therapy you would experience there. You will not regret it.

I agree with Tony, a workshop would be of benefit to you.
In the meantime, try to be seated on the toilet in a plane. The motion of a plane, or train, makes it very difficult to urinate whilst standing.
Many men and women without paruresis struggle on a plane due to the altitude and it's effect on the bladder.

Thank you for the advise Colin, but sitting does not help me unfortunately. At the moment I try some Alpha Blocker pills, which improve the situation a little bit.

Hi John

Certainly don't give up your job! In the UK, catheters are one-time use only, lubricated and disposable. You will find a catheter easy and quick to use. Once your subconscious realises that you can empty your bladder at will using a catheter, a lot of anxiety will go away. You may find you dont need to go to the loo so often, and you may even find that you can pee on the plane.
Incidentally coffee is a strong diuretic - you could try not drinking coffee before or during a flight.

Hi Andrew,

thank you for your answer. Do you have some experience in using catheters? As I wrote in another post I am using some alpha blocker pills at the moment which helps a little bit, but the catheter would be the most effective solution. I have to overcome my mind to do that, but as you wrote it is probably not such a big deal as I think. I never drink coffee in flight, only some water, but after 5 hours I normally feel the pressure on the bladder that I am forced to go to the bathroom.
