Jokes aside, I have had a similar experience in the past- but i put it down to excessive recreational drug use. in your case i think you were obviously under a lot of stress and walking away from your job released a lot of that stress.
If you can take control of your own thoughts you can control them. I found it was hard to believe that my own mind had such an imagination and could play games with my self, but once i accepted that i found it very easy to silence my mind and in time replace these negative thoughts with positive ones.
Maybe I am wrong, maybe it is voice to skull, but the end result is you want to be able to control your own thoughts. Part of the workshop i attended was about controlling the 'boo monster'- the negative voice in your head. For me it was maybe the most crucial part, aside from meeting others like myself and realising I was not quite as strange as I had been telling myself!
