Self Cath

Hi,
This is a basic info request. I've decided I'd like to learn techniques to self cath - looking for some advice or guidance on where / how people may have learned this.
I'd like to seek prof guidance from a urologist / Dr. and wondered if anyone on here has any recommendation in the London / South East area.

Sorry Dan about nobody answering your question but I guess that's the nature of this forum.I don't live in your area so I can't help you on that ,all I can tell you is what I did.First go and see your GP and ask to be instructed in the use of self use catheters.The GP will probably try to dissuade you as understandably there is always a slight risk of infection when using so you have to be aware of this.I made the GP aware that I still wanted to cath so he referred me to the hospital where a nurse instructed me how to carry on,don't be embarrassed they've seen it all before.She then gave me some catheters to try at home and said if I was happy about using them to go back to my GP and he would order on prescription,which he did.I use the disposable Flocath ones with the saline lubrication built in.

Ps Don't be put off by the thought of inserting the cath into your body ,after two or three times you'll wonder what all the fuss was about and by having one of these in your pocket you'll gain control of your life back

Thanks for your message Roy.
I work on Harley St in London (although not a Dr) - and was thinking about bypassing the GP and paying for a private appointment with a urologist - I'm just not sure how to broach the subject and whether or not they will refuse to teach me. Even whether a urologist is the right person for the job! I expect they don't get many people asking for this!

I should try the GP way first as remember to get to a private urologist you have to be referred by your GP.

Hi Dan

There are several points you can make to a reluctant GP

1. The option of not having a catheter is "involuntary urine retention". Medics take retention seriously (it qualifies as an emergency).

2. that the autonomic nervous system's reaction to a threat is retention - it closes the urethral sphincter and relaxes the detrusor - so however much you want to pee, the body wont let you, even if bursting.

3. Hospital training makes medics wary of catheters due to the high rate of infection there. but outside hospitals, our experience of male self-catheterisation is that infection is almost non-existent.

4. you are hopefully not going to use them every time, but only intermittently when trapped. Also having one available will reduce your anxiety so much that you may feel be able to pee in a cubicle normally.

5. an article in a nursing trade magazine surveyed self-catheterisation and recommended its use for self-management. I can provide the article if you need it.

I told a guy who helped me at the local Disability Project about my paruresis and that i leak urine and he told me he uses self cath as he is in a wheelchair following an accident and he said they weren't very pleasant at all.
I would take Andrew's advice Dan and go from there.
