Hospital Doctors!!

A couple of months ago while catheterising myself I found difficulty in inserting the catheter when about 1" into the urethra .I did not want to tear the urethra so I contacted my GP who referred me to the hospital to have the camera inserted to inspect the problem.
in the urology dept the doctor inserted the camera and said that all was well except for a slight restriction about 1" into the urethra but he was not going to do any rectification and I was discharged.
He then asked "how I knew where the restriction was "and I told him I self catheterised,he said" all the time" ? I said no just intermittently in social occasions as I suffered from Paruresis a nervous problem.He took exception to this,"Never heard of it"he said."You either can pee or you can't pee there is no in between and if I had my way you wouldn't be using catheters and walked out of the room.

These Dinosaur Doctors don't you just love em!

Hi Roy

Yes the effect of the autonomous nervous system on the sphincter and the detrusor is not widely known. Might be worth having a bit of UKPT literature handy, or a printout of a relevant page of the website for such occasions.

However you seemed to deal with him pretty well!

urologists are not neurologists or psychiatrists.

If there was ever a urologist with background in psychology and
neurology,, that guy would understand shy bladder.

I have a urine infection (very sore tip of penis) so went to the doctors,as you do and was asked to give a wee sample. I explained that I may struggle not just because of the pain but also that I had a shy bladder, so could I pee at home and bring the sample back. The female doctor looked at me puzzled and said "how funny" I was going to ask for help about it but thought it a waste of time after that.
After Antibiotics still very sore and my paruresis makes it twice as bad.Feeling rather desperate now so really need to get something sorted. Hoped I may grow out of this problem but at nearly 50!! think I must come to you guys for help.

I was 55 when I started on the path to recovery.
It is not easy.

Its like taking a cold shower on a
winter day.
Its like sunbathing in the hot desert sun.

The path to recovery is based on seeking the anxiety
that makes you uncomfortable... by standing locked up
in front of others and being observed just standing there
and not peeing.

Of course, you graduate the exposure so you don't freak yourself
out. But you must face the anxiety on a daily basis
to de condition to it.

There is no easy road here since we must face the anxiety
to diminish the effects of it.

Usually when I get a reply that neutralises my point I just let it go but I feel I must reply.If I had seen a GP who said they had never heard of our condition then I can understand it as they have to try to cover all departments of health,but for gawd sakes William the doctor I saw at the hospital was a doctor who specialises in waterworks problems and all aspects associated with it.We sufferers are one of these aspects and our problem should be part of his essential reading as our problem is estimated to effect 7% of the population.So please do not defend him as he is a dinosaur and an arrogant one as well

no way am I defending him, no way !!
If he did a little more research as in continuing education, he would
be more informed.
As a general rule, it can be assumed the exceptional doctors are rare..
I for one do not have a high opinion of the avg doctor out there
whether they be chiropractors, urologists, psychologists, neurologists,
surgeons, dentists, etc, etc.
What you came across is the norm...
I never implied the norm is ideal, it is not,
as in many professions...
There is no
reason why the urologists cannot be educating themselves..
BUT ....NO ONE IS COMPLAINING
TO THE DOCTORS. IF NO ONE COMPLAINS, IT DOES NOT EXIST
TO THEM. IF ONE COMPLAINS, HE WILL THINK IT AN STATISTICAL ODDITY.
SO THAT IS THE PROBLEM YOU HAD.

WE AS SHY BLADDER PEOPLE ON THE WHOLE HAVE DONE A GREAT DISSERVICE TO
THE CAUSE BY KEEPING THE CONDITION SECRET. THESE DOCTORS NEED TO
GET AN EARFUL OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT HAVING SHY BLADDER.
NEXT TIME YOU VISIT HIM , ASK HIM HOW MANY SHY BLADDER PATIENTS
EVER COMPLAINED TO HIM, VOCALLY !! MAKING HIM MISERABLE.

IF WE HAVE BEEN MORE VOCAL, THE IGNORANCE WOULD NOT BE AS BAD.

MOST UROLOGISTS DON'T KNOW SHY BLADDER BECAUSE THE SHY BLADDER GUYS LIKE
YOU AND ME HAVE NOT BEEN VOCAL, WE HAVE BEEN SECRETIVE.

ITS GOOD IF MORE SHY BLADDER PEOPLE SPEAK UP, LOUDLY TO THE
DOCTORS, SOONER OR LATER THEY WILL NOTICE, THERE IS POWER IN
NUMBERS.

another thought... I visited 3 different urologists,
no one even thought about shy bladder.... they look at the
cystoscopy, the physcial issues, the urodynamics, etc...

The chances of you finding a urologist knowledgeable
about shy bladder are almost nil.
Why ?? because shy bladder sufferers like to
be secretive, that is one of the causes of the
condition.

No offence intended to you William in fact your experience of Urology depts is very similar to my own.I think in the case I highlighted it was his arrogant attitude to my responses rather than his lack of knowledge that upset me most.

arrogance from lack of knowledge....

some doctors don't believe in other proffesions..like psychology...some MD laugh at chiropractors..yet the same MD when questioned about relevant anatomy..don't have a clue..
when it comes to back pain...

urology is thought of as a plumber....by your doctor...

It's interesting that the same urologist would know that people can have conditions that hinder them from urinating. He'd also understand some have conditions that would make the urge more frequent and he'd understand conditions that don't allow full emptying, etc. He'd understand stage fright and fear of heights but not this…I'd find another doctor for sure.

The fact that he doesn't get it at all, tells me something else. He doesn't have it. It's like stuttering or a hundred other things that if you don't have it you can't even imagine it. And the fact that you can't even imagine it, tells me its a real condition. If you're great at something you usually don't have anxiety about it, when you're not you do. And anxiety and easily build. I've seen nothing to dissuade me from believing it's partly physical (at least at some point) and partially social.
