fundraising for ukpt

Hi just to let you know my employers monthly charity day for which I nominated ukpt and which was accepted, collected funds for dressing down in the office on 31 July so hopefully the funds collected should be winging their way to you soon. But what was a little annoying was some of the jokey comments and lack of understanding i heard from a few colleagues after some of them looked up ukpt on the internet to find out who the charity was. Perhaps if i were brave enough I could of challenged them but unfortunately thats not possible for me.

Hi Mark,

I think it's brilliant that you suggested UKPT as the charity for your employer to support. Small charities get very little publicity or financial help,

I'm sure that many of your colleagues don't understand or appreciate the issues that UKPT helps with. With any phobia, those who don't suffer can't understand why it's a big issue for those who do. I'm sure we all know that what we feel is somewhat irrational, but that doesn't stop it being very real and often debilitating for us.

The help and support that UKPT provide, specifically Andrew, is invaluable for all of us who have this condition and want to do something about it in our lives.

On the follow up workshop in Manchester last weekend, Andrew highlighted that if everyone who had been on a workshop gave £3 per month to UKPT, this would make a real difference. It may be that not everyone is able to afford this, but for those who can, perhaps we should, to enable the work of UKPT to be more widely known, and to help those who need its help and who can't necessarily afford to pay for the workshops themselves.

What a fantastic thing to do for the UKPT. Well done. Out of interest, given your understandable reluctance to challenge those colleagues, how did you put the UKPT forward to the company for this fundraising? Was it anonymously?

As Pete said, lack of understanding is to be expected. It may help to imagine it had been for a charity that supports people who have a phobia about injections, or a fear of spiders that prevents them entering a room until someone checks it out for them. I think you would have the same level of comment from the same few guys. So what I am getting at is that it is not a reaction to paruresis itself, but a reaction to something they feel is trivial: they are not able to comprehend the consequences.

Changing to Pete's mention of everyone chipping in a little: it struck me that thinking in terms of a pint a month, or a pint a week, or a round of drinks a month, or even one round a week: across over 400 ex-participants, that would raise the sort of money that would allow us to get part-time help in moving things forward, rather than depending on me: I am not eternal!

Hi Andrew et al,
I haven't posted for years, I was at the original London Workshop,(the equivalent of Woodstock I suppose!)but was pleased to see efforts being made to raise funds. I contribute each month by bank payment, and have done for years. Its not a lot but I am sure it helps. Don't forget without people such as Andrew, a lot of sufferers would be on their own,and he does a great job. Yes there are millions of charities out there who need help, but lets face it, unless you have AP you cant begin to comprehend what a rotten phobia it can be, so it will always remain pretty unfashionable as a charity. So if you can, contact Andrew and set up a monthly payment, I have to say as a long term sufferer I find the charity immensely helpful in a society that really does not show much awareness.

Well done to those who are still putting in so much time at the UKPT, helping so many people.

Thank you for your response I hope the monies raised went to good use. I was able to nominate the UKPT to a smallcommitee for our office that decides on which dress down day charities funds are collected for. This was by email so I could avoid telling close by colleagues just in case there were any issues with it and as it happens i fears were proved right. What made it worse was one of the colleagues that made the jokes was sat right next to me the very month the UKPT collection was done so trying to keep a calm and collected air was a challenge all its own and yet we share similar other out of work interests that made it so frustrating.

If future opportunities arise to nominate the trust again then I will still put forward a nomination because even though I myself am unable to face the idea of a workshop experience just yet at least others can benefit.

Just to let you know that a cheque arrived today for Â£69.75. The accompanying letter reads "I am pleased to ask you to accept a donation Of Â£69.75 raised by staff at the Canterbury Benefit Centre as a result of a Charity Dress Down Day held at the office".

So well done Mark and one again thank you for a taking unique initiative.
