Been to two workshops whitch were helpfull,de-sensing when I can and trying to be positive.
About a year and a half after my last workshop I decided to go to my GP
who referd me to the hospital. I had my urine, blood and an ultrasound done whitch all came back fine.so I asked the Doctor about self catherisation so he referd me to a urologist (today) The urologist had never heard of Paruresis or Shy bladder and seemed up his own arse a bit and wanted to do all the talking and would not listen to the pycological aspect and decided that the most likely cause was Bladder Detruser Neck Dysyneria or to put it in English dis coordination of the Spinctors.
He said he could do a full internal under a local but felt that this was a waste of time.I said that I would like to be shown how to self cath but he wasn't keen at first but then agreed to book me in with
a nurse in a few weeks but I walked out feeling a bit humiliated like I had to almost beg.he has prescribed me beta blockers as he hopes this will help so we will see.
I walked feeling pissed off! I don't care if someone has never heard of it but a bit of warmth towards another human being doesn't go a ####ing miss does it

Hi Pete

Sorry you had a bad experience there. I hope you realise that not only does the urologist have a problem, he is unaware he has! Just remember that your aim is to get shown how to self-catheterise, and that everything else is irrelevant. So make sure you go see the nurse, if only to prove your point.

Hi Pete,

I had the same experience as you, in that my GP hadnt heard of it, neither did the urolagist he referred me to. However both listened to me when I explained the condition, how it effects people and about the UKPT and workshops. I had no trouble getting my point accross and got refered to the nurse without any hassle.

Sorry to hear it didnt go so well for you, and I would have also been angry.

Hope you get to see the nurse soon.

Thankyou for your responses.
I have recently been to the hospital to see the nurse and have been shown how to self catherise and at first I was a bit nervous of them but with a little bit of practice I have got used to them.
For anyone who hasn't used one I would say at first it feels a bit uncomfortable (not painfull)then you get used to it.
Since doing my workshops (two) and desensing on my own things have improved but I just felt that because I am not cured then to have a 100% get out of jail card would mean that I could go anywhere and do anything! Freedom!! At last. About a year ago there was no way that I would of considerd self catherisation but I am so glad that I did because the truth is shy bladder was holding me back before but it can't now.
The thought of not having to worry about going or not is a relief.

Good for you Pete ,it isn't the ideal solution but it certainly adds a string to your bow when you go out into this big wide world where any type of way of relieving yourself is surely welcomed
