I have downloaded the shy bladder hypnosis download through iTunes. I wondered if anybody else had used this and if it had helped (please say if short term or long term)

I haven't seen the app but generally speaking hypnosis is good at helping you relax but unless incorporated into a package of therapy including CBT and systematic desensitisation it is unlikely to resolve the problem of paruresis. I use hypnosis occasionally when treating clients for simple phobias but it is not a tool I would use for treating paruresis. Even when treating phobias I still have to take clients through systematic desensitisation. So in summary I would say if it includes desensitisation and exercises for challenging your beliefs then great. If it is just hypnotic suggestions for relaxing you in public loos then it is unlikely to be of much use. Regards Martin Burridge Newport Cognitive Therapies

Just had a look at the Pee Aid app - as far as I can see it's not hypnosis, so probably wasn't what the first poster in this thread was referring to. What it appears to do is play you the sound of running water... if that is enough to make things easier for you then I wouldn't bother with the app - you could record that sound yourself onto the phone using the voice memos function and then just play it back when the time comes.
I guess you could even try that at a urinal if you were using headphones... and in fact listening to headphones may block out knowlege of other people around which could help!
While searching I did come across a more expensive iTunes hypnosis download - that's a more regular "song" format - ie you listen to it. I've actually purchased hypnosis tracks before from the company that produces that one - you don't listen to it at the time you need to go, but rather at a time when you can relax and not be disturbed. The ones I bought (not for paruresis) didn't do much for me, but maybe I'm someone who doesn't respond well to hypnosis.
I would recommend the workshops though - I'm a few weeks on from the beginners one now and things are a lot better than before I attended. Not perfect but then I'll be on the follow up workshop soon and looking forward to further progress then.

I would not recommend hypnosis recordings for anything to be honest. The idea that you can hypnotise an anxiety disorder away is bit of a myth.Hypnosis is a tool that can be used as part of an overall therapy package but on its own it unlikely to resolve any issue. Although these recordings may be pretty cheap your money would be much better spent on a UKPT course.

Hi,
Sorry this was a download not an app. Also as described above it has made little difference as it is relaxing for the 20 minutes that its playing but then does not create more relaxed feelings in the public bathroom environment.
I've had some success with a relaxation mp3s for pauresis. I have only started using it after going on a workshop but I am finding that anxiety levels are lower now - but it will be because I've had a multipronged attack of CBT, desensing, backed up by hypnosis.
The main advantage I find is that it keeps my head slightly clearer so I can then consciously keep my mind focused. Also I feel bloody relaxed after a session, maybe I'm more suggestible.
