Individual CBT treatment

Hi All - I have taken much inspiration from this site and only wished I could bring myself to attend a workshop. I am definitely a mild sufferer for many years and now in my 50s. I have found myself an accredited CBT therapist and had the first session today at £70 a time.
He said he had only treated a few Paruresis sufferers but felt he could help me. After the session I asked him how many sessions it was likely to take and he said it was too early to say and he would have a better idea after another 2 sessions or so. For homework I took away a form to fill out called “Multimodal Life history Inventory” and also was asked to complete a table of situations from 1 to 10 defining levels of difficulty in peeing that I would experience. This seems sensible as I guess it would be used later for some sort of homework for desensitising.
Obviously, I want to get down to business and I was wondering if anyone has experience of one to one sessions with a CBT practitioner and how many sessions it was likely to take to get down to business and show some progress?

I had a CBT therapist for about 18 months meeting once a month. In between visits I was given "homework". A lot of what he taught me was similar to what I also learned on a number of the workshops organised by Andrew through the UKPT. In simplistic terms it boils down to not worrying about what other people are thinking about you (people really dont care) and doing plenty of de-sensing to get used to the toilet environment. Practice, practice, practice.

I preferred the workshops as I was more motivated in a group session than on my own. I can recommend both one to one CBT therapy and the workshops.

I'm not totally "cured" but I have learned a lot from my experinces and I still keep practicing on a daily basis what I've been taught.

How long it takes depends on the individual and how long you have had pauresis. I had it 20 years. I used CBT (did it myself because I have trained in CBT amongst other therapies). The total desensitisation process took me 2 years but I was greatly improved after 1 year.

Am I glad I found this site! To realize that I am not the only one with this problem is in itself therapeutic. I too am contemplating CBT and would be grateful if anyone could recommend a therapist in or around Hampshire.

This is the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists search engine. They may not necessarily have experience of Pauresis but any CBT biased therapist should be able to help.

I have just started CBT on the NHS. The first 3 lesson, where a lot to take in and had to do a lot of homework, which I found difficult due to work and family commitments. I am going for my 4th app today, so will post later to let you know how its gone. What I have learned so far, is that I am a very negative person and think that everyone is thinking about me when I am in the loo. I am going to try everything that they recommend. Hopefully Will attend a workshop with Andrew sometime in the near future as I think this will be very helpful.
