Understanding Fear of Incontinence Participants Needed for Research at University College London
Do you suffer from a fear of being incontinent? Do you worry about losing control of your bladder or bowels?
Living with a fear of incontinence is particularly distressing and disabling. People with this fear often report that it causes them great distress, limiting their day-to-day activities and disrupting social relationships. This debilitating fear is currently poorly understood and those affected often suffer in silence without receiving help. Through this important research we hope to learn more about the concerns of people who fear being incontinent in public.
We are looking for participants to complete an online questionnaire, as part of our study, which is being conducted at University College London. Your information will increase our knowledge of this particularly distressing disorder, helping us to develop new and effective treatments which can improve the quality of people’s lives.
If you experience this fear, please click on the link below to find out more about the study.

Re: Toilet Phobia - Fear of Incontinence - Research
I suspect you will not get any response from this forum because this site is for people who have the exact opposite: the inability to void in social situations, and so the fear that they will not be able to empty their bladder when they need to.
Best wishes

Re: Toilet Phobia - Fear of Incontinence - Research
thank you very much for your reply. I fully agree with you. I wondered if there may be a subset of people using the forum who despite not being able to void in social situations actually have a fear of having an accident in public as they are potentially having to wait for longer periods before they are able to use a bathroom?
Best wishes
Christine
Re: Toilet Phobia - Fear of Incontinence - Research
Good point, and I have been in that position a long time ago. I think the difference for me is that this crossing of legs occurred only very occasionally. Anecdotal evidence is that most times people find a way of relieving themselves, but feel embarrasmment at the steps they have to take to do so e.g. going round the back of a pub.
However no harm in asking. Any potential candidates would want anonymity to the extent of not giving a name or address.
There is a population who have an agarophobic type of fear when away from a toilet, i.e. they will not be able to get to one in time should they need it. They are not incontinent, but fear an accident. You can contact these via the Anxiety UK charity.
Best wishes
Andrew
Re: Toilet Phobia - Fear of Incontinence - Research
Thank you Andrew. We are already listed on Anxiety UK as they have an extensive section on Toilet Phobia. A variety of people may be experiencing this fear for a variety of different reasons - we are trying to get a clearer picture of this fear.
Participants in our study are given the option to leave name and address to take part in further parts of our study, however this is entirely optional and people are free to only complete the online questionnaire without giving their name. All responses are treated anonymously and we comply with the Data Protection Act.
