Hi all, been an ap sufferer for nearly 30 years or so now. A few years back I found out how to self cath and that made a huge difference to my life. It opened up lots of doors for me an allowed me to pursue things that had been out of the question for me for years. Eg : long plane trips, different jobs, nights out, seminars, courses etc.
I noticed that one or two people over the years had mentioned hypnosis wasn't much help for ap. Well I suppose it depends on what type of hypnosis you choose, now I'm no expert on this however with my limited reasearch I've come up with a few points that may be of interest.
First off without delving too deeply into the depths of hypnotherapy there would appear to be too major schools of it.
1.The direct authoritarian way
2. Th erickson way, indirect suggestions.
The direct way means that the therapist will give your unconcious mind suggestions directly eg.... YOU WILL STOP SMOKING, YOU WON'T THINK OF IT AGAIN, YOU WILL WAKE UP WHEN I TELL YOU TO!
Now the problem with the above is this, if the person who is being hypnotised does not like an authoritarian figure barking orders at them, then the hypnotic session will be of little use and rather ineffective. So the person will walk away thinking that hypnosis is of no use!
However if the indirect method is used eg YOU'LL FIND THAT YOUR CRAVINGS WILL DIMINISH OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, AND THE THOUGHTS WILL FADE AS YOU FEEL BETTER WITHIN YOURSELF AT A PACE THAT'S JUST RIGHT FOR YOU, AND AS YOU RELAX YOU'LL FIND YOURSELF FEELING LIVELIER AND HAVE THE URGE TO AWAKE WITH A GREAT FEELING!
One thing I should add, words and words alone are not effective in changing ones habits! What else is needed is a strong visulization of your success when putting hypnotic suggestions into your subconcious mind. Vizulize yourself achieving your goal!
Remember that somewhere along the line you visulized in your mind not being able to pee whether you were aware of it or not!
On the net there is an hypnotist called Glenn harrold, now on his web page he sells various cds for confidence etc. He also sells cds for phobias and says that he can do custom jobs at request. So it might be worthwhile to see if he could do something for ap.
And please this is not a plug to sell a product or for the man himself. It could be another avenue for others who are suffering from ap to explore.

Steve, some good info there thanks for that! I had a few hypnotherapy sessions a few months back for my AP. I didnt really feel any changes however I was also partly to blame as I didnt get consistent enough with the anchor techniques and the visualisation etc.
Iv always watched people like Paul Mckenna and have wondered couldnt he just hypnotise someone to forget about their AP and pee without thinking?! Or does that wear off after time?
I think that the sessions have to be repeated numerous times for it to take effect and become like second nature.
Having said that, the guys on this site use a kind of system of desensitizing and gradual exposure thearapy, where you actually go through the motions and fake it at the urinals.
Now the hypnotherapy and visulization combined with the real life desenitizing/faking it at the urinals therapy that these guys use might just be a very powerful combination.

Hi Steve
You may be interested in our FAQ on this subject on our website.
I have had this problem since around 18 years of age, i`m now 30 and tried hypnotherapy about 5 years ago. I found it made no difference, infact i became a little sceptical about the whole idea of hypnosis. I`m sure it could work for some but not me.
On this subject I would like to say that I tried some sessions about a few years ago now & found that although it did not solve the problem I found that it helped very much with anxiety on the whole thing which was helpful especially if you base that on the de-sense approach. But what I really wanted to say was that there are many other aspects to hypnosis & I found this thread interesting as I was watching a re-run of top gear yesterday where Mckenna was on & used stage hypnotisation on Hammond & he was completely under his spell - not being able to remember how to drive a car at all. It seemed this could be switched on & off whenever he wanted. However he did say that not everyone is suceptable for this kind hypnotisation. But other areas like NLP might be quite good because they involve going through mind petterns in your head which if practiced enough could maybe accessed at time of de-sensing etc...
