Urodynamic study/uroflow tests

Hi,
I've undergone investigation for a possible prostate disorder which involves visiting hospital for tests using special urinals and today an invasive test in a Urodynamic x-ray room.

Despite trying to explain to my consultant that I suffer from shyness when peeing in public I was persuaded to attempt this test knowing that I would have to pee in a large room with two nurses present and the consultant himeslf. Despite lots of reassurance and the turning on of taps and discussions about my forthcoming holiday I was absolutely unable to pee at all and no meaningful results where gleaned from the session. I felt that I had let them down and felt somewhat of a failure.

Reading about this "condition" on this site has been a big relief. I have suffered from the inability to pee in public since being five years old when I remember being asked to pee in a sluice room following a tonselectomy for a nurse who soon got very tired my reluctance to perform on demand.

I have always subsequently preferred to pee in private and sometimes then not at all if anxious.

Despite several visits to my consultant no mention has ever been made that this condition exists and affects others. Mention has been made by his nursing colleagues of "it's only mind over matter" whereas I now realise that I am experiencing an involuntary response and can get help.

I feel so relieved. Thanks for providing and maintaining the site.

Hi Paul

I hope you now realise that in no way did you let your consultant down and were a failure; instead he let YOU down, and HE failed in his prodessional duty, which was to take the patient's concerns seriously and to research what may lie behind them.

I say this becasue we have had cases where an individual has been referred to say a clinical psychologist who has said in effect "I have not come across this before, but I will see what I can find"; they did find relevant information on the web, and so were able to help the patient.

Could you email me your address, in confidence, and I will post you our brochure. You can take or send this to your consultant. At the least he will become informed and so be less likely to treat another patient that way; and one can only hope that hemay even apologise!

Been there Paul,

Same thing happened to me. Pretty exhausting and stressful day. I had a flowmeter test prior to the Urodynamics. I managed to perform for that but even then I had to pay to have the equipment set up in a private room in a private hospital where the windows where blanked out.
Urodynamics for those who don't know involves you being hooked up to a machine where a catheter is inserted into your privates and then your bladder is artifically filled through the catheter. Whilst this is happening you are being watched by a couple of nurses who expect you to urinate so they can monitor results from high tech equipment.Its a catch 22 situation because they can't really leave you alone whilst your hooked up to this equipment

Paruresis sufferer or not. Not an easy thing to do.

You did your best mate (and so did I) thats all any one can ask of us
