That picture is rather a worst case scenario.A lot of squat toilets in Thailand are indeed like the one in the picture, but raised off the ground by about 8 inches or so. So long as you haven't got delly belly you don't really have much use for them. As I said before if you're only visiting tourist areas eg Bangkok, you can use the many western style toilets in the malls/tesco lotus/macdonalds/pizza hut/carrefour etc. If you're in central Bangkok and you need a dump, just head for a really posh hotel and walk in as if you're a guest, then you can use one of their public loos in the foyer! Don't be shy about it, just do it! If you go drinking at the bars, then it's in the hands of the gods what you might get!Though I can report some okish sit down toilets.
