I live in Thailand and can tell you that if you stick to the tourist areas of Bangkok, chiangmai etc you should be ok, as the hotel toilets are all western standard, even in the larger department stores / malls. However if you venture out of the tourist areas, the toilets are indeed squat style. But in Thailand you always have a seperate cubicle, so you're not sat in view of others. I'm sorry I can't comment about China or Japan because I've never been there.
