Toilet phobia: Understanding distress associated with using public toilets
Participants Needed for Research Study on Toilet Phobia- University College London
Do you experience strong difficulties or concerns about using toilets outside your own home?
Toilet phobia - or ‘paruresis,’ - can cause real distress to people and have a negative effect on their day-to-day lives. For some people, their concern about using public toilets has to do with being heard or seen going to the toilet. For others it may be to do with hygiene and worries that using public toilets may cause contamination of some sort. Some people are not sure why they have difficulties using toilets outside their own home.
We are looking for participants who experience significant difficulties with using public toilets for a research study being conducted at University College London. The study involves completing an online questionnaire and is completely anonymous.
By helping us with this research we can improve our understanding of this distressing condition, possibly helping us to develop new treatments. All information you provide will be kept strictly confidential.
If you want to take part in this study, please click on the link below. The questionnaire takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Why is there an age limit for this study (18-65)? I am 73 and have had this problem for years. I would have thought ones age would not come in to it, after all we are still human.
Re: Participants Needed for Research Study on Toilet Phobia- UCL
We are sorry about the age limit, the only reason is because we only have ethics approval for people aged 18-65 to complete the study. Although people over 65 are the same and can still experience this problem, it requires a different ethics approval that we don't have.
Thanks for you interest.
Re: Participants Needed for Research Study on Toilet Phobia- UCL
I am 74 and also very much regret that there is an upper age limit to your survey. I have suffered from the condition all my adult life and have a lot of relevant experience. I would be very interested to know the result of your research. How could I obtain this information?
