I have suffered from paruresis for over 40 years and was grateful for the opportunity Martin offered me to undergo a course of therapy. Just to be able to talk to someone about my problem was a relief in itself. The course consisted of two-way discussion and both of us visiting public toilets at various locations. After a number of consultations I felt better able to control my anxiety when using the toilets. In fact, I have, on several occasions, successfully used a public toilet when it has been occupied by someone else. I realise that it will, of course, be a long haul after 40 years of suffering with this complaint but every journey starts with the first step! I would not hesitate to recommend a course of therapy to anyone suffering from paruresis.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for posting on here & for taking the time to let us all know your experience having had the unique opportunity to participate in therapy. I know from the past where I too have been able to share my opinions to others on a workshop about having the condition has helped me a lot also. I should imagine that a taking such a course would prepare you mentally & give you that all important courage that you need to try various different locations for de sensing, albeit ones you would have never tried before.
You mentioned it had been a long haul 40 years of suffering & that was no doubt paramount in what moved you to take this course. But after something like that I hope that feeling of the all that time has now greatly diminished & you can't help thinking that if you just had that opportunity before you certainly would n't have waited that long!
Well Done Clive & Well done to your therapist for making it all possible to take such a course in for the first time in the UK
