Going with my mate

Hi all.

Having attended the October beginners workshop and March Improvers workshop in London I thought I'd share a recent success I had. I haven't done much practising in the last 6 weeks or so, but I did stop at a service station last week and went at a urinal 5 down from someone which was quite encouraging. A few nights ago I went out with my best mate for a few beers. I told him about my AP after the first workshop and he was fine about it. Anyway, when we arrived at our third pub I was really in need of a pee so I asked him to come with me which he did saying, 'oh yeah I'd forgotten about that' (which shows when you tell someone it doesn't make them think that you are some kind of freak or that they will even remember!) When we got to the urinals we went next to each other as it was a Wetherspoon's pub with big shoulder height dividers (why aren't all facilities like this?!). I went no problem and we had a chat as we stood there. This was the first time I have been able to do this since I was about 16 (37 now). It was a really great feeling to be out with my mate and not have to worry about when to dash off for a pee. I would not have been able to do this had I not been on 2 workshops and without the support and encouragement from Andrew and Colin and the other people on those workshops. So if you are considering booking a place on a workshop, do it - it will really help you get your life back!

Hi Robin

What heartwarming news. And teh fatthat your mate had forgotten all about your telling him about your AP; as you say, it shows its no big deal to him.

You can really start motoring now, cos when you go out drinking with your mate, you can make a point of going when he goes, even if you dont need to (when you can fake it); and you can ask him to come with you. The more used you become to going with him, the more you will be able to tackle the more challenging pub toilets.

Wow, even when you go out drinking, you're still practicing!! You've come far since we last met it seems, even if my mates did know about my AP, id not feel ready to go in the same time with them volunterary!

Hi Mark,

I don't always 'practice' when I'm on a night out but on this particular occasion as I was with my mate who knew about my AP so it seemed appropriate to see if I could go with him. Also the fact that it was the Wetherspoons pub with big dividers meant that I knew what the toilets were like and that they were very AP friendly. What I have started doing though when going out is always drinking a pint of water beforehand so I have to go reasonably early on in the evening rather than hanging on until later and getting anxious about it. I also try to check out the facilities on arrival if it's somewhere I haven't been before so there are no surprises later on when you do need to go; that way if it's a small trough for example, I know what to expect and already know that I will probably use the cubicle anyway. (I think this was Colin's advice on the workshop).

not been too bad with me, however due to working so much and having lots to do at home I simply have no free time for de-sensing. I never go out anywhere either apart from supermarkets so no developements im afraid!

It is nice to hear some of my words stuck with you!!
Seriously, it IS good to know you are still making good progress, and making a bit of a game out of it is half the battle! REfuse to take it seriously and it wont be serious!
Bit disappointing to hear Mark (see below) say he doesn't feel he can make time to desense in order to move forward with his AP - maybe you should book another workshop, Mark. That would force you to commit. After all if you had an ingrowing toenail, would you really say "I don't have time to go and have this fixed, and spend time every night treating it at home" ?

But back to you Robin. I think it is great you have a buddy on tap whenever you feel like a desense session. You made such good progress at the workshop, it is brilliant to see you going from strength to strength. Thanks for the kind words about the workshops. If it encourages someone to attend, you can feel proud!
